Dear California ft. @NappyGeniusEnt

Dear California;

Do you remember how you felt in 1992??

That moment you were ridin’ down Crenshaw or Sepulveda inhalin’ purple haze, eyes slightly low, Power 106 blaring through the speakers; and all of a sudden you hear Snoop Dog spew the illest lyrics alive….

“1 – 2 … 3 and to the 4, Snoop Doggy Dog and Dr. Dre ….”

Whoooo, the rush you felt just knowing this is something special. This shit right here son, this shit right here … is CLASSIC… and this is the music that birthed…."

THE COMMITTEE

Fast forward 13 years later, I am in the office suffering from a huge case of déjà vu; when friend of the blog, “Chan,” sends me what just might be the second coming of Snoop and Dre. I hit play and a drunken; cloud of elusive melodic transformation enters the office followed by the perfect off beat melody. I honestly can’t say if I am high or if this music has me in a trance, just when I think it’s the buzz of the purp it happens ….

@xiamchanx Spilled Ink ***EXCLUSIVE*** An Afternoon with Chan

It’s Saturday afternoon, I was headed to score an exclusive interview with RZA of Wu-Tang after 3 subway trips, a bus, and a swift run to the office I missed RZA by 20 minutes. However I lucked up on one of the industry’s unknown gems and one of my favorite underground female lyricists Chan.

Sitting in an expansive conference room in Legend’s Studios New York offices waiting for an intern to deliver a cheese omelet and a large orange juice from the bodega up the block is a woman just shy of 5 feet dressed in a t-shirt and sweats, diligently writing in a notebook while Universal Music Group A&R play her beats for what could be a new mixtape; as a fan I am both excited and anxious to talk to quiet mystery known as Chan.

“I don’t know what to expect, honestly, I always fuck things up. Story of my life. How are you a fan of mine?”

And that is how the interview began…

@teyanataylor The Misunderstanding Of Teyana Taylor

Misunderstanding n. a failure to understand something correctly – Webster’s Online Dictionary.

What a perfect way to describe the complexity that is Teyana Taylor. Is she a singer? A rapper? A dancer? An actress? Or just that  a misunderstanding. For some of us we’ve followed Teyana from MTV to the big screen, yet we are still perplexed on who she is exactly. “The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor,” takes us on a voyage through the mind of not only an artist but a fan. It’s apparent in the mixtape Teyana is a fan of Lauryn Hill, and while some critics manage to use that against her we find it endearing.

But you be the judge. Check the mixtape out    here!
